Today, millions of Canadians celebrate Canada Day, their nation’s birthday, dating back to 1867, when the four current British colonial provinces joined to form the country consisting of ten provinces and three territories that we know today. We at KEXP feel a particular kinship with our polite northern neighbors, not just because their western-most metropolis -- Vancouver, B.C. -- is so close geographically that we consider them “local”, but also because our DJs play hundreds of Canadian bands each year. In fact, Canada may be the next most band-populated country after the United Stats according to KEXP’s playlist. Today, Midday Show host Cheryl Waters honors Canada and its wealth of musical talent by featuring all Canadian artists for the entirety of her show, from 10AM through 2PM, and you can listen all day besides as we play more.
Among the many excellent Canadian bands you’ll hear are many new, up-and-coming ones, like Vancouver, B.C., band Weed, whose forthcoming debut, Deserve, first astounded DJ Sharlese, host of Audioasis, and then John Richards, host of the Morning Show, who booked them to perform live on KEXP next week (July 10th at 9:30AM). Deserve doesn’t come out until July 22nd (on Seattle’s Couple Skate Records), but you can here their first single, “Set Me Back”, now:
Weed are so new to the scene they don’t yet have a video out, but there are plenty of other Canadian bands that do. Enjoy this roundup we’ve gathered for you here today, focusing on videos by Canadian bands released within the 12 months. Until next time, happy Canada Day, eh?
