I just discovered that I have been a very bad Adrian Belew fan. I’ve enjoyed his guitar playing (and singing and songwriting, no matter what my friend who think he ruined King Crimson says), and I had no idea that he had been in a band called The Bears. Even when I grabbed this album and snapped a picture of its goofy cover (with a goofy caricature of Adrian B himself on it), I didn’t get it. It took actually reading the comments on the album cover to finally understand, thanks to those smartypantses at KCMU 1987. Thanks guys! (And this being the 21st century, I am now listening to this album via the magic of Rhapsody as I type.)
This will not be the last we hear from Mr. Belew in this space, I assure you.
“Hey guys… [illegible, but probably ‘your label’s art’] Dept. ain’t doin’ ya justice on this cover. Then again… solid rock/pop songcraft. Solid is not synonymous with unique or superior – but it is this side of good. Sorta like early XTC meets Utopia with big budget dazzle-ry in the production dept…”
“1.3 & 2.1 are good.”
“Figures, they’re now [illegible] dots!”
“These guys look so likable. Must be the label. This cover makes me MAD.”
“I like Superboy.”
“One of the guys on this cover looks like Dustin Hoffman and the sound is a bit too commercial for me. Adrian is downplaying his talent w/these guys.”
