In Portland, it takes a village. Or nearly that, at least, to bring to life the songs of Kyle Morton. Over three albums and a handful of EPs, the 11-member group Typhoon build gorgeously orchestrated folk pop around Morton's uniquely intimate and personal lyrics. Morton, who nearly died of Lyme Disease in his youth were it not for "modern science" and a donated kidney from his dad, explores notions of mortality, time and place as though he were on "borrowed time". It's time well spent, though, as the music this band of close friends creates is equally cathartic for listeners, who can't help but sing along wtih the anthemic choruses. Late last year, Typhoon swept into the KEXP studio, squeezed all 11 members into our small space, and performed two singles and a B-side from the new album, White Lighter, due tomorrow on Roll Call Records.
