Robert Glasper was exposed to music at a young age. His mother brought him as a boy out to her jazz and blues gigs, and he also learned much about music in church, where he began to sing and mix gospel and jazz harmonies. Since those humble but enriching beginnings, Glasper has built a strong career and has recorded with Mos Def, Jay-Z, Q-Tip and J Dilla. During KEXP's sessions at the Bumbershoot Music Lounge, he and the rest of the Robert Glasper Experiment brought their unique singing styles and rhythms to add a twist of variety to the mostly indie rock lineup. Snare fills mixed with an alto saxophone and low-end bass lines to create spacious, sometimes eerie songs. The songwriter and jazz pianist even gave a nod to Seattle music history with a radically different cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Watch the band’s performance here:
