Live Video: Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside @ Bumbershoot Music Lounge

photo by Dave Lichterman (view set)

“I don’t care what you think,” sings the red-dressed Portland native Sallie Ford. The lyric is definitely in line with the spirit of her newest album, which has as much to do with the idea of freedom, of not being captured in any genre box, as it does with the huge punching sound of Sallie Ford and her band, The Sound Outside. Upright bass, scorching vocals, reverb guitars come together to fill the listener’s ears with sonic uppercuts. “You may think of me as just a little girl, you may”, she continues over a surf-rock guitar lick, “but I am here to prove you wrong.” The music is also slinky, even fiery, and at some point you’re transported from a musical boxing match to a Paris nightclub, cigar smoke lingering everywhere, mixing with Sallie’s appreciative and memorable voice.
