Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. This week’s featured songs come from artists performing during KEXP’s broadcast from CMJ. Today’s song is “Crying From the Home” by Saint Rich from the 2013 album Beyond the Drone on Merge.
Saint Rich – Crying From the Home (MP3)
When building a band, who better to do it with that one of your best friends? Well, Steve Marion and Christian Peslak have been making music together for about a decade, starting back in high school. Marion has been a part of the New Jersey music scene for a while and one weekend, after rigorous touring, he wanted to get a group together to chill out and practice. Unfortunately or luckily (depends on how you look at it) a crazy storm hit and Peslak and his guitar were the only ones to make it. The two of them, one weekend, and seven songs later, Saint Rich was born. It’s obvious in their music that the duo is able to express their individual talents, while turning out deep, cohesive material. This month they released their first full length album, Beyond the Drone, which is home to their killer track “Officer” and today’s fantastic song.
“Crying from the Home” instantly hits with an infectious bright, sunny vibe. The artists’ familiarity and comfort with one another is evident throughout this delightful track. It’s unbelievable how seamlessly Christian Pelsaks vocal and guitar skills mesh with Marion’s amazing melody. The lyrics are catchy enough to memorize and I can guarantee you’ll belt out a few powerful “woah”s when you listen.
The band is currently touring around the country indie-rock band Wild Belle. Just last month they performed at Crocodile Cafe in Seattle, but fortunately for you, they are playing live on KEXP during our broadcast from CMJ, on Thursday, October 17, at 7AM PST. Listen to KEXP then and get up-to-date touring information on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. Right now, check out the official video for their single “Officer”:
