For a group that’s only been together for three years, Ghost Wave has certainly made a splash on the worldwide music scene. They recorded their debut full album and first US release, Ages, in six short days and released it via Flying Nun this summer. This five-piece band from New Zealand describe themselves as being “somewhere between the Flying Nun bands of the 80s, the British explosion of the 1960s and the wayfaring dubs of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry” — after witnessing their performance at Judson Memorial Church, we’d add the Velvet Underground to that list, too. It’s psychedelic rock delivered in warbling guitar rifts, Matthew L Paul’s genuine vocals, and some damn fine tambourine playing.
