After over a decade, Fruit Bats is, um, flying away into the sunset, as mastermind Eric D. Johnston announced this morning: "Hey All. So, after 13 years, 5 albums, bunch of tours, and lots of laughs, Fruit Bats is calling it a day. There is no major or dramatic reason – I’m not gonna launch into one of those “the changing face of the music landscape in the digital age,” things. Especially since I don’t even understand any of that stuff. It’s been a long run and time for a change." In 2010, the brilliant Mark Linkous, better known to the musical world as Sparklehorse, took his own life. Box of Stars, a non-profit focused on increasing awareness about mental health, are working on a tribute album to the late Linkous, and are looking for support. Titled Last Box of Sparklers, the compilation will feature tracks from The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, Mark Lanegan, Califone, the Joy Formidable, Phantogram, Grandaddy's Jason Lytle, and more. With her cancer treatment behind her, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are returning to the road, including April 2nd and 3rd stops at the Showbox in Seattle. Not only that, but the band will perform November 28th on a float during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. In a press release, Jones said, "I have traveled a hard road this year and being thankful is something I relate to deeply." Their forthcoming album, appropriately titled Give the People What They Want, is due out on January 14th. [Pitchfork]

Another album to look forward to in January 2014 is the next release from Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks: their sixth album Wig Out at Jagbags is due out then on Matador Records. The band debuted four songs from the upcoming release at the Crystal Ballroom in their Portland hometown, which you can watch at CoS, along with this Pavement/Led Zeppelin/Velvet Underground encore below.
