It had to be one of the stranger pairings we heard about this year: acclaimed electronic producer Nicolas Jaar and the relatively unknown Dave Harrington. That the two might be friends from their Brown University connection (both studied there) mades sense, but what would a composer of heady ambient work do with an experimental guitarist? Turns out, make one of the best albums of the year! Jaar and Harrington, actually, have been working together for a while, as Harrington supported Jaar on a live tour. While on the road, the two concocted the DARKSIDE, a name that conjures both their dark smokey sound and the famous Pink Floyd album that their psychedelic/prog songs lean a bit towards. After a producing a self-titled three-song EP and a remix of Daft Punk's entire 2013 album, Random Access Memories (actually more of a reconstruction or reimagining than a typical remix), they settled in to a critically acclaimed debut LP that is sure to be on numerous tastemakers' top album lists for the year. We were lucky to nab Nico and Dave for an intimate in-studio session featuring in only two songs a range of emotion. Welcome to the DARKSIDE:
