I’m a sucker for a good B-side. As a teenager, one of my favorite cassettes was the 1984 Warner Bros. compilation Revenge of the Killer B’s. My classmates might have recognized some of the featured artists (Talking Heads, the B-52’s, Depeche Mode, Madonna), but they didn’t know these songs. Familiarity with flipsides was a badge of honor strictly for diehard music lovers.
In 1993, Saint Etienne collected some of their best B-sides on You Need a Mess of Friends to Stand Alone. As much as I love having rarities like “California Snow Story” and “Filthy” on one handy anthology, the album title is my favorite thing. I just love that sentiment: even the most dynamic individual benefits from a strong support network.
That’s the spirit behind the One-Day Radio Rally this Thursday, December 19, too. We’re teaming with four other Puget Sound public radio stations — KING, KBCS, KPLU, and KNHC (aka C89.5) — for this special one-day fundraising drive. And by supporting KEXP during the One-Day Radio Rally, you can have an even bigger impact on our community. Because when you make a gift of $120 or more, we’ll donate a winter care kit of a hat and gloves to United Way of King County, to be distributed at Seattle-area homeless shelters.
It’s been an amazing year in music — and teamwork has been at the heart of many of its highlights, from Daft Punk enlisting dance music pioneers Giorgio Moroder and Nile Rogers for Random Access Memories to KEXP, Sub Pop, and the Space Needle joining forces for an unprecedented Mudhoney show in the Seattle sky. So we’ll celebrate the year in music by counting down the Top Albums of 2013, as voted on by you, during the One-Day Radio Rally.
Tune in Thursday and make your gift during the One-Day Radio Rally. You’ll be powering KEXP and making a difference in the lives of those less-fortunate. That’s a badge of honor any music lover should we proud to wear.
