Live Video: Wooden Shjips

photo by Dagmar Sieglinde Patterson (view set)

It’s always a delight when psychrock voyagers Wooden Shjips return to dock in the KEXP studios. The band have just released their fourth album, Back to Land, on Thrill Jockey Records, an album that captures the feelings of home from frontman Erik “Ripley” Johnson, who has just thrown down anchor in Portland, along with drummer Omar Ahsanuddin. With the other half of the band — bassist Dusty Jermier and keyboardist Nash Whalen — still in the Bay Area, Wooden Shjips had to cram their studio recording time into an intensive eleven-day session, but you can’t feel the time crunch on the resulting album: Back to Land is a languid ride, every bit as laid-back as the city half-of-them now call home.

Wooden Shjips turn their sails to Seattle again this Friday, January 17th, playing The Crocodile with Kinski and Black Whales.
