Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Find a Love” by Gringo Star from the 2013 album Floating Out To See on My Anxious Mouth, Inc.
There’s rarely someone who can understand and share your creative vision better than a sibling. Brothers Nicholas and Peter Furgiuele have been a duo made in heaven since they started their first band, A-Fir-Ju-Well over a decade ago. In 2008 they added co-writer Pete DeLorenzo and multi-instumentalist Chris Kaufmann into the mix and became the Gringo Star we know and love. For their first two albums under their new moniker, All Yall and Count Yer Lucky Stars, the trio worked with famous producer Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective). This most recent collection, Floating Out to See, saw a lot of change for the band. DeLorenzo departed and the remaining trio soldiered on with the project. Also, instead of enlisting the help of a producer, they decided to do it all on their own. According to Peter, “This record is more ourselves. There’s no other filter besides our filter.” That kind of creative freedom must have been invigorating, because the results are spectacular. Their music is addictive and they even self-describe their sound as “liquid melodies cascade through air like a waterfall in zero gravity.” Woah. Quite a lofty claim, but they definitely deliver. “Find a Love” is reminiscent of 50s/60s rock and roll with a unique pop infusion, it’s the perfect balance.
Gringo star just wrapped up an extensive US tour last month, so their website doesn’t have any upcoming shows listed. Here’s something to look forward to, the band has been selected to perform at this year’s upcoming SXSW festival as a showcasing artist. To find more up-to-date announcements and tour dates check out their Facebook page as well. For now, check out their animated video for “Find a Love” below.
