Thursday Music News

  • Okay, not “exactly” music news, but it’s just been announced that none other than Stephen Colbert will take over for David Letterman as the host of CBS’ The Late Show in 2015! Letterman announced his retirement earlier this month with a performance from Joseph Arthur, accompanied by R.E.M.’s Mike Mills and Peter Buck, and has recently been at the top of his game as far as musical guests are concerned. (I mean, who hasn’t seen that Future Islands performance yet?) Colbert has had a strong run of great musical guests on his own, and has even released a single on Jack White’s Third Man Records. So, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with future musical guests… (And you can keep an eye on the late-night TV musical landscape with KEXP’s TV Eye column!) [ABC News]

  • Speaking of late-night TV musical guests, The National frontman Matt Berninger stopped by The Pete Holmes Show last night. Watch Pete and Matt write a “hit pop song” together, inspired by Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” [Consequence of Sound]

  • Our friends at Iceland Airwaves have announced their second wave of acts at this year’s music festival, November 5th-9th in Reykjavík, including The War on Drugs, Future Islands, Caribou, and more! Check out the complete line-up at their website. [Iceland Airwaves]
  • Scottish post-rockers Mogwai are re-issuing their 1999 album, Come on Die Young, on June 16th via Chemikal Underground. Available as a 4xLP boxset, 2xCD, and digital download, the reissue will also include demos, early recordings, unreleased tracks, the 2001 Travels in Constants Vol. 12 EP, and more rarities, like the early take of “Ex Cowboy” you can hear below. [Pitchfork]

  • We’ve got another track to share from the upcoming release from Eels, a.k.a. Mark Oliver Everett, a.k.a. E. Stream the track “Where I’m From” below. E’s eleventh full-length album The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett comes out April 22nd on his own label, E Works, and he’ll be playing Saturday, June 7th at the Moore Theatre. [Stereogum]

  • And, finally, in shitty, shitty news: local electronic-music producer IG88 had his entire rig stolen… after playing a benefit show for breast cancer. Ugh. More information here, and check out a shot of his set-up here. [The Stranger’s Line Out]
