I’ve put together my latest list of Bands to Watch for 2014. (See my previous list on the KEXP Blog here.) Many of the tracks are US debuts or World Premieres. You can listen to them on my radio show Thursday night 9:00 PM - 1:00 AM PST.
- The Away Days
This Turkish band’s single, “Your Colour,” is out June 9th. I gave it its World Premiere on Tuesday night when I filled in on Larry Rose’s show. My only complaint is the song is too short because it’s almost like a teaser. Obviously the best way to release a track without an album. Smart! I’ve heard their unreleased demos and I’m excited to hear their debut album.
I found some happy songs by Alvvays. The Toronto band’s debut album was produced by Chad VanGaalen and is available soon on Royal Mountain Records. You can get their first single “Adult Diversion” on iTunes. They just played their London debut at Blind Tiger Club in London on May 6th.
I’m digging this track hard:
Teleman is comprised of 3 former members of Pete & the Pirates. Their debut album “Breakfast” was produced by former Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and comes out June 2nd on Moshi Moshi. They sound like a mellower Django Django. Their first single “Christina” came out last year. Here’s my favourite track so far:
- The Amazing Snakeheads
The Glaswegian trio’s debut album, appropriately titled “Amphetamine Ballads” combines goth, rockabilly, blues and garage. It’s out on Domino Records. I keep hearing about their insanely good live shows and want to see them live soon.
- Model Aeroplanes
Model Aeroplanes, a super young (but you wouldn’t know it from their sound) Scottish band, hailing from Dundee, have a new single called “Electricity.” Debuted it on my show this Thursday. It will be released May 26th through First Run Records.
- A Victim of Society
A Victim of Society are an Athenian psychedelic duo. Their debut full length album “Distractions” came out on April 28 via Inner Ear Records and European distribution via Rough Trade. “Enough Said” is the first single. The video just came out.
I’m a late discoverer of the Finnish band Paperfangs but quickly fell in love the moment I heard their cassette/download only EP, AAVVAV. They remind me of another Scandinavian dream pop band, The Radio Dept, and early New Order. They put out their debut album last year too. Check them out. Better late than never. Here’s the track “Lifelong” off AAVVAV from 2012.
Check out the archive of my show from Thursday, May 8th for a special Great Escape show. The Great Escape is Europe’s Leading Festival for New Music, set in Brighton, UK. I had special guest, Jason Kinnard, blogger from Click & Dagger, with his top picks. I also played bands I’ve seen over the past 8 years at the Great Escape. (Click here for reports from 2009 and 2012 on the KEXP Blog.)
