Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Midday Show with DJ Cheryl Waters, is “Coming Down” by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah from the 2014 album Only Run on The Orchard.
KEXP has a long-running love affair with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, dating back to their self-released self-titled 2005 debut. Despite having no label, nor publicist, the band captured our attention and made it into heavy airplay, with listeners voting their album #2 in our Top 90.3 Albums of 2005.
Over the years, and over their past few releases, the line-up has waxed and waned, but frontman Alec Ounsworth has always been behind the joyous moniker. On their fourth and latest album, Only Run, it’s just Ounsworth and long-time drummer Sean Greenhalgh, but on today’s Song of the Day, they’re joined by Matt Berninger of The National, a former tour mate. (Remember when both bands played our John in the Morning at Night event in 2005 at Neumos? You really had to be there!)
You can follow the band on Twitter and Facebook. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are playing Saturday, August 2nd at The Crocodile with Stagnant Pools, and will hopefully be back in the KEXP studios. Until then, watch a solo in-studio session with Alec Ounsworth recorded earlier this year:
