Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Morning Show with DJ John Richards, is “Too Deep” by The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger from the 2014 album Midnight Sun out now on Chimera Music.
The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, or The GOASTT, is the unearthly manifestation of musicians Sean Lennon and Charlotte Kemp Muhl. After meeting backstage at the 2004 Coachella Music Festival, the two realized they were kindred spirits and began collaborating musically in 2008.
On their sophomore release, Midnight Sun, the GOASTT abandon their earlier acoustic incarnations for a fuller sonic sound, mixed by famed producer Dave Fridmann, known for his abilities with neo-psych bands like Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips. In fact, the band have since gone on to tour with bands like The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala, who share their love of complex psychedelic rock, rich with retro influences. On today’s Song of the Day, GOASTT channel the spirits of the past and the present with this propulsive track.
