Song of the Day: Pets – Dream City

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with DJ Kevin Cole, is “Dream City” by Pets from the 2014 self-released album Get Turned On.

Pets – Dream City (MP3)

Cuddle up with Sacramento-based noise-pop band Pets. The duo of Allison Jones and Derek Fieth tear through their dark fuzzed-out pop with the cat-like coolness of The Jesus & Mary Chain and the friendly-puppy punk simplicity of The Ramones.

Formed in 2003, Pets have since shared the stage with bands like The Gossip, Matt & Kim, and Dead Meadow, and in 2010, they won the Sacramento Area Music Award for “Outstanding Pop.” The husband-wife pairing have had some stylistic changes over the past decade, finally arriving at the blissed-out sonic sound they have now. Their latest album, Get Turned On, features guest drummers Lucy Giles and Kepi Ghoulie, former frontman of garage-rockers the Groovie Ghoulies.

Make friends with Pets on Twitter and Facebook. There’s not a video for today’s Song of the Day yet, but check out a video for another album track, “Evil Smile”, below, directed by Andrew Hooper:
