Holiday weekends are never the most robust for new releases, but some exciting albums did make the schedule this week. KEXP's Music Director Don Yates points out the third release from Sinkane, a project of Sudanese-born, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist/vocalist (and former Yeasayer/Caribou/Of Montreal sideman) Ahmed Gallab. Yates describes their latest as "a masterful blend of soul, funk, reggae, various East and West African styles and more, featuring warm, lush, groove-driven tracks with plaintive vocals, strong hooks and emotionally direct lyrics."

Another notable release this week comes from UK duo Coves, whose "debut full-length is a promising set of psych-tinged dream-pop with shimmering guitars, ethereal organ, hypnotic rhythms, occasional girl-group melodies and Beck Wood’s haunting vocals and lovelorn lyrics." The long-awaited latest (and ninth!) album from Blonde Redhead features a "spacious, atmospheric sound, spare instrumentation and eerie vocals." Montreal band TOPS share their sophomore release, "a fine set of slinky dream-pop with jangly guitar lines, dreamy synths and Jane Penny’s breathy vocals." And Seattle's own Deep Sea Diver share a new EP, "a diverse four-song set of adventurous pop-rock ranging from guitar-laced rhythmic pop to atmospheric, keyboard-based ballads."Influential lo-fi pioneers Half-Japanese return with their first new album in 13 years, produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof. Olympia doom rockers Earth share their eighth studio album, Primitive and Deadly, featuring guest appearances from Mark Lanegan, Rabia Shaheen Qazi of Rose Windows, Brett Nelson of Built to Spill, and Jodie Cox of Narrows. And longtime KEXP faves Pinback reissue their excellent 2004 album Summer in Abaddon; they'll be performing that album in its entirety at The Showbox on Sunday, September 28th.
