Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Forget The Fall” by Flowers from the 2014 album Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do on Kanine Records.

Flowers - Forget The Fall (MP3)

Formed in London in 2012, Flowers' minimalist indie pop doesn't take any time to reveal its beauty, opting for direct songwriting and front-and-center vocal harmonies. Singer Rachel Kenedy and guitarist Sam Ayres first met when Kenedy auditioned for a new musical outlet, and upon that addition of Ayers' friend Jordan Hockley on drums, Flowers became that that project. The trio recorded early demos constantly as they lived together in a London flat, and after releasing them online, they attracted the interest of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, who enlisted them for a European tour. While preparing the songs for their first album, they crossed paths with producer Bernard Butler, who brought the band to his studio to produce their debut, this year's Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do.

Built on a skittering tom-and-snare beat and a chiming guitar riff, today's featured song, "Forget The Fall", is a breezy slice of bedroom pop with a garage band twist. The band's straightforward arrangement eschews the bold orchestration that often entangles other bright and jangly groups, and double down on direct sincerety: when Kenedy sings "do what you want to/it's what you should do" over her bandmates' rough and charming Sundays-esque performance. In its lyrics and the band's performance, "Forget The Fall" is about as straightforward as it gets, but that's part of its charm: a song like this is a reminder that sometimes a few chords and a simple melody is all it takes to relay a feeling.

Flowers will be coming Stateside for a NYC show in October, so if they announce any more North American shows, that news will be on their Facebook and page on Kanine Records' website. Below, watch the video for the Do What You Want To, It's What You Should Do track "Joanna".
