Song of the Day: Luluc – Without A Face

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Without A Face” by Luluc from the 2014 album Passerby on Sub Pop.

Luluc – Without A Face (MP3)

It’s been said, it’s the quiet ones you have to watch out for, which is certainly true for today’s spotlighted band, Luluc. The Melbourne-via-Brooklyn duo of Zoë Randell and Steve Hassett won over Sub Pop co-founder Jonathan Poneman with their lilting harmonies and lulling melodies, which Poneman describes as “bracing, subtle, tender and magnificent”.

For their Sub Pop debut, Passerby, the band worked with Aaron Dessner of The National to perfect their beautiful, delicate sound. Dessner brought in members of The National’s touring band as well as musicians who have played with Bon Iver, Beirut, and Sufjan Stevens, to help out in the studio. Singer/songwriter Randell noted, “Steve and I have similar intuitive taste. We work together so confidently and compatibly that it was kind of remarkable how well Aaron was able to fit in. He really felt like part of our creative brain.”

Luluc are currently on tour as a twosome in support of the new album, and they’ll be opening for label-mate J Mascis on Wednesday, November 19th at the Tractor Tavern. You can follow the band on Twitter and Facebook, and check out a version of today’s Song of the Day as recorded in the KEXP studio earlier this year:
