Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Mountain” by Meatbodies from the 2014 self-titled album on In the Red Records.

Meatbodies – Mountain (MP3)

If you’re like us and can’t get enough of the LA garage rock scene — Ty Segall, King Tuff, Mikal Cronin, Thee Oh Sees (John Dwyer just relocated there), and many others — you’re definitely going to want to hear Meatbodies. Formerly Chad and the Meatbodies, the LA band started as a project of Chad Ubovich, a bassist and guitarist who’s backed Cronin on tour and joined Segall in Fuzz. For his own self-titled debut, Ubovich sought producer Eric Bauer (Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, White Fence, Sic Alps) to catch his fiery licks and sharp hooks and even enlisted Segall himself play drums on a few tracks. All this is to say that Meatbodies isn’t going to seem different from those other bands, which was hardly his goal. Still, Meatbodies does manage to sound unique. Ubovich’s riff-heavy songs tend to wander more frequently from their often sludgy depths into a woozy psychedelic head-space, just as today’s featured song, “Mountain”, climbs to dizzying heights on intertwining guitar lines yet never loses its footing on its thick bass lines. Prepared to leave your own meatbody behind in the mind-bending space of Meatbodies.

If you want to hear them live you might have to wait a bit. Meatbodies were just in town last week and they’ve already finished their 2014 tour. But you can read a review of their show with Twin Peaks at the Vera Project here. And you can follow them on Facebook. For now, here’s a new video for “Rotten”, a song on the pre-debut-LP “Mudgals” 7-inch:
