This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Not Alone Tonight” by Murder Vibes from the 2014 self-released album Murder Vibes.

Murder Vibes - Not Alone Tonight (MP3)

Of all the moods to seek out in music, morbid is not at the top of most people's list. Despite their hair-raising name,  Murder Vibes can be surprisingly soothing. The Seattle duo’s self-titled debut is macabre yet alluring with atmospheric, electronic production and sweeping vocals that evoke a more reserved take on early Bono. Murder Vibes’ sinister electronic rock is the result of producer/singer combination Jordan Evans and Peter Hanks. Hanks’ vocals tower over 80's influenced digitally constructed beats like those in “Not Alone Tonight.” There’s something almost comforting about the album’s first single, which counteracts its skulky impression when Hanks affectionately reassures us that we're not alone tonight. The song's got more sex appeal than actual murder vibes. Needless to say, homicide is not Murder Vibes’ intention in producing their spellbinding work.

Murder Vibes are taking the rest of the year off, but they'll be at the Columbia City Theater on Friday, January 23rd. Look for more dates, music and other info at their website, Facebook, and Twitter. For now, watch their creeptastic teaser for "Not Alone Tonight" below:
