Kevin Cole's Song of the Year: Júníus Meyvant - Color Decay

My favorite song of the year is “Color Decay” by Icelandic singer-songwriter Júníus Meyvant. I wasn’t blown away by the song the first time I heard it, but it’s not that type of song. It’s deceptively subtle, with a quality that pulled me in, haunted me, and made me want to listen to it again, and again, and again. Part of it is the way the song unfolds, building in intensity as the strings and horns slowly play off each other and the lyrics…“moving into place, from gloom to grace.” Mysterious, melancholy, soulful, there’s something spiritual about “Color Decay” that’s ultimately transcendent and triumphant as the horns and strings swell and march to their final note.

  • Listen to "Color Decay" now:
It’s so wonderful, beyond belief, and amazing that “Color Decay” is his debut release! I had several opportunities to catch Júníus live this past year — in Seattle as part of our Reykjavik Calling event where he played with both Eric Anderson of Cataldo and the Seattle Rock Orchestra String Quartet, and at our Iceland Airwaves broadcast at the KEX Hostel in Reykjavik, this time with a ten piece band. Each performance was different and compelling in its own right (by martyn), with KEX Hostel’s gorgeous and soulful (dare I say Van Morrison-like) full band performance giving us a glimpse of what we can expect in 2015 as he prepares to launch his full length debut.
