Mirel Wagner has an uncanny ability to conjure haunting atmospheres with little more than an acoustic guitar and her chilling, sparse vocals, but what's even more striking is the narratives she chooses to craft with those talents. Mortality, family, and love are just some of the themes that colored in the singular, disarmingly-hushed songs from her second album, When the Cellar Children See the Light of Day, that she shared when she performed live at KEXP in fall 2014. In between songs, she discussed her songwriting process, her inspirations, and her perhaps-surprising influences (Spice Girls, AC/DC), but even after giving that glimpse into her work, Wagner remained as intriguing as ever. Watch the entrancing performance below.
