  • The Mountain Goats have announced a new release today: Beat the Champ, a concept album about pro-wrestling. In a press release, frontman John Darnielle writes, “It is, as any fan of the band will expect, a heartbreaking and heartreviving album about imperfect people described perfectly, with melodies that will stay with you for days.” To prove it to you, he’s shared the first track, an ode to Mexican-American wrestler and former WWE Cruiserweight Champion Chavo Guerrero Sr. which you can stream below. Beat the Champ will be out on April 7th via Merge Records, and the band will play Friday, May 29th at The Showbox. [Consequence of Sound]


  • Tacoma garage rock titans The Sonics are still going strong after fifty years together as a band. And this Spring, they’ll release their first new full-length since 1980’s Sinderella, titled We Are The Sonics. Stream the album version of “Bad Betty” below, which originally came out as a Record Store Day split 7″ with Mudhoney last year. We Are The Sonics hits stores on March 31st via the band’s own Revox Records. You can catch the band on Thursday, April 2nd at The Moore. [Stereogum]

  • Portland power trio Sleater-Kinney took the stage on Conan last night to celebrate the release of No Cities to Love, their first new album in ten years. Watch the reunited group rip through the track “Surface Envy” below. The band will be performing three nights at The Showbox, May 7, 8, and 9. [Pitchfork]

  • Last year, Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O released her debut solo album, Crush Songs, a charming collection of songs recorded around 2006 through 2010 when she “crushed a lot,” as she explains in the liner notes. Today, she shares a video for the track “Day Go By,” with director Wiissa capturing that crushed out feeling in the scenes. Watch: [Under the Radar]
