Live Video: Ibeyi

photo by Dave Lichterman (view set)

With Ibeyi, every song is a blessing, sometimes quite literally. The Parisian born twin sisters reach deep into their French-Cuban ancestry and call upon the spirits of Santería on their debut LP, which blends Yoruban evocations with contemporary expressions of love and loss. Their music is, as they say, a mix like they are, of those two distant worlds, but also other spirits enchant their songs, ones from closer to home, namely their father, famed Cuban percussionist Miguel “Anga” Diaz, and their elder sister, both deceased. For Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz, their ghosts “are not gone” but are “making words making sounds making songs”, and those songs, channeled through the twins’ lovely harmonies and minimal production combined with traditional instrumentation are full of life. Come dance with your ghosts as Ibeyi performs live in the KEXP studio.
