Will Butler, best known as a core member of Arcade Fire, opened up the second day of Sasquatch on the main stage with a fun set of driving rock. Butler is a multi-instrumentalist, and seems equally confident on guitar, keys, or just playing the front man and singing. Indeed, his dynamic stage presence is a big part of the draw. He strikes poses, raises his guitar high over his head, and jumps around with abandon. The three other members of his band keep things tight and on point. Butler's music is more straight ahead and stripped down than his swelling, layered work in Arcade Fire. This is rock and roll, unadorned, stripped down and effective. A hot sun was already beating on the crowd gathered at the stage, those eager fans who camp out for music from the very beginning of the day. Those who managed to tear themselves away from their camp sites were rewarded with a great, sweaty, danceable show that closed out with the wiry rock of his lead single "Take My Side". A great start to another epic day of music!
