Live Video: Failure

photo by Alan Lawrence (view set)

Thankfully, Failure never quite lived up to their name. Though in the 90’s, they were never really allowed to sit at the cool table of grunge superstars, they found critical praise through their own inventive brand of heavy alt-rock. Record sales, unfortunately, never followed, and five years after first signing to Slash Records, they broke up. Yet now, 18 years later, Failure can boast near legendary status as fans and other bands have caught up their sound. Failure’s reunion of principle songwriters Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards and drummer Kellii Scott surprised even themselves as their first show, at the El Rey in Los Angeles, sold out in minutes. They followed it quickly with a new album, The Heart Is a Monster, which picks up precisely where their critically acclaimed ’96 LP, Fantastic Planet, left off – delivering 18 tracks of textured, moody and utterly engaging psychedelic space-rock. Now on a successful tour, the band stopped by KEXP studio to display the consistent excellence of their discography, playing songs both old and new. It’s a performance that’ll please Failure fans from the 90’s just as much as people born afterwards, and you can watch it all here:
