Song of the Day: Battleme – Shake Shake

Battleme

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Shake Shake” by Battleme from the 2016 album Habitual Love Songs, out January 15th on El Camino Media.

After nearly a year on the road, Portland project Battleme return with their third full-length, Habitual Love Songs, bringing more of their ’70s-inspired gritty rock sound. For today’s Song of the Day, frontman and primary songwriter, Matt Drenik tells Billboard, “I wanted something that felt heavy, both lyrically and musically, and encompassed the idea of touring for a year.”

Upon returning home, Drenik racked up nearly 20 demos from his Northwest basement, later refined at Revolver Studios with his brother Jason co-producing. The album was rounded out in the studio with percussionist Paul Pulvirenti (Elliott Smith, No. 2), as well as Chad Savage, JJ Eliot, Colin Hegna (Brian Jonestown Massacre) and William Slater (Grails, Denver).

No tour dates are planned yet, but follow the band on Twitter and Facebook for the latest. Check out a video for today’s Song of the Day below:
