Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Seasons Change” by Nadia Reid from the 2015 album Listen To Formation, Look For The Signs, on Scissor Tail.

Nadia Reid - Seasons Change (MP3)

On her debut full-length Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs, the young New Zealand-based singer/songwriter Nadia Reid displays a wisdom beyond her mere 24 years of age. Raised in the folk clubs of Dunedin and Christchurch, Reid developed her voice and began playing guitar at age 15. Though Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs was self-released back in November 2014, it's finally seeing a U.S. release and is quickly gaining buzz. Today's Song of the Day calls to mind the softer moments of Cat Power with the gracefulness of Laura Marling. A mournful pedal steel guitar accompanies the beautiful ballad, as Reid seemingly sings of a love long lost.

There are no U.S. tour dates listed yet, but you can follow Reid on Twitter and Facebook to be among the first to know of them. In the meanwhile, check out this lovely video for a different track off Listen To Formation, Look For The Signs, featuring Super8 footage taken by her father, Craig O'Reilly, in both England, circa '93, and New Zealand, circa '95.
