This week in El Sonido, we’ll check out superheroes from L.A., party in the desert, rock out alone in our room and dig some experimental electronic pop from planet D.F. via Venezuela.

First up is an awesome live set from Los Angeles group Chicano Batman. They stopped by KEXP in the summer of 2015, dressed me in one of their tux tops and then blew me away with their unique psych soul sounds. This session was part of KEXP’s Immigrant Songs series that celebrates the work of immigrant musicians living in the United States. Check the Chicano Batman set below, and watch all the Immigrant Songs videos here.

It’s been about five years since we’ve had a new album from Venezuelan (currently based in Mexico City) electronic artist Algodón Egipcio and the news that his latest full length La Confianza Ciega is on the way is worth celebrating. His music is an exploratory trip of electronic pop that’s frenetically soothing, pushing boundaries with heart. Get a taste of the upcoming release with “La Estrella Irregular” below, and also another great new one "Multiestabilidad."

Leave me alone! Chavos Bien, the stoney, surfpunk garage pop LP from Los Blenders was one of my favorites of 2015. The Mexican group just dropped a video for the track “Solo,” a fun flashback to the “my parents don’t get me” videos of my childhood. Alejandro! Abre! Aaaaa!

The good news about 2016 album releases keeps coming with the announcement of La Yegro’s second album Magnetismo. Her Argentine folk bass is some of the best out there and the first single “Chicha Roja” is proof she’s got more to come. It features musician/producer Gustavo Santaolalla from Bajofondo and takes us on an animated journey to dance in the desert.

Finishing up is a mixtape I created with a handful of mini mixes that I made recently as back up for my live DJ gigs and features a variety of Latin, Jamaican and global bass sounds.

Thanks for listening. See you next time.paz.
