Seattle's silver-haired soul singer and her backing band, Grace Love & The True Loves stopped by KEXP to perform a few tracks off of their eponymous debut album, and the nine of them filled our live room to beautiful capacity. Their performance was pure vintage - her rich baritone echoing the inflections and stylings of Aretha Franklin, and Jimmy James' guitar piercing with AM radio twang, throughout double-time tempo changes and the slurring brass wail that only a trombone-equipped horn section can bring. While talking to host Kevin Cole, the band recounted their impromptu beginnings and studio unpreparedness, but their meticulous arrangements now sound anything but unrehearsed. The band lit a fire during their session, just before headlining a KEXP benefit that night. If you missed it, they'll be back on Memorial Day weekend for Sasquatch! and again in July for the Winthrop Rhythm and Blues Festival. In the meantime, shake it out with Grace Love & The True Loves in-studio at KEXP.
