M. Ward’s 2016 release, More Rain, sounds as advertised, offering a perfect soundtrack for rainy days. Ward has admitted to writing it for that particular reason, and while at first listen it doesn’t sound like a festival ready album, it was perfect for Sasquatch! Music Festival. For the songs off the new album, the beautiful gorge scenery provided more than enough views to stare out into longingly. And Ward also drew from his deep catalog to balance the gloom with a slew of songs that captured a sunnier tone. Whether it was the beach boy-esque guitar in the Monsters of Folk song he “covered”, or the driving bass lines found in some of Ward’s older work, the set found a way to balance the somber tone of the newest album with a more upbeat display. Ward showed the Bigfoot stage that his mastery of songwriting is mirrored by his excellence in set list choice.
