Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. All this week we are celebrating Seattle Pride and PrideFest 2016 by featuring all LGBTQ artists for our “Song of the Gay” podcast, selected by me, DJ El Toro. My pick for today is "Comicon" by SassyBlack from her 2016 self-released album, No More Weak Dates.

SassyBlack - Comicon (MP3)

Originally known to KEXP listeners as one-half of Seattle hip-hop duo THEESatisfaction (who recently announced they’d disbanded), Catherine Harris-White drew inspiration from romantic disappointment for No More Weak Dates, her new solo album as SassyBlack.

White’s open-minded and boundary-defying music mirrors her fluid sexuality, as she discussed in a recent interview for Loud and Quiet Magazine: “I’m not a binary person; I have many spirits and energies within me,” she says. “I’m not just masculine, I’m not just feminine. For me specifically, I don’t just date women, I don’t just date men. I date whoever I want and that’s why I feel ‘queer’ works best for me. I’m a queer person in general; I’m a weird person. So it encompasses a lot of my dimensions.”

SassyBlack has a few dates in the NW coming up. She'll be playing Capitol Hill Block Party on July 24th on the Vera Stage at 5pm, then Doe Bay Fest in early August and in Olympia on August 6th. Look for more info on Catherine Harris-White's website and on the SassyBlack Facebook page. For now, watch the official video for "Thriller (Game Healer)", from her 2015 release, Personal Sunlight:

You can hear more LGBTQ artists on KEXP's Big Gay Podcast. Also, tune in to KEXP all week to find out more about the Pride events happening around Seattle, including a special Pride edition of Audioasis on Saturday, June 25th. Then, on Sunday, June 28th, join us for KEXP's Pride Party in front of the 5 Point Café in downtown Seattle. Find out more here.
