Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Gemini Rise” by The Ghost Ease from their 2015 album, Raw, on Cabin Games / K Records.

  • The Ghost Ease - Gemini Rise (MP3)
  • The Ghost Ease has been called many things - garage, grunge, shoegaze, dreamy, aggressive, ethereal - the list goes on, but they are rock above all else.  Singer/guitarist Jem Marie started The Ghost Ease as a solo project before joining forces with drummer Nsayi Matingo in 2012.  They released a self-titled LP on Talking Helps Records with Joey Binhammer on bass before current bassist Laurence Vidal came aboard in 2014.  The Portland trio recorded Quit Yer Job EP on Cabin Games Records early last year, before the release of a full-length album, Raw, on K Records. The album was released in late 2015 after a successful Kickstarter campaign funded their time in the studio with award-winning producer Steve Fisk, known for his work with Nirvana and Soundgarden.
  • Though well-received, the acclaimed Raw even pales in comparison to praise for the artists' live performances. Portland favorites, they have been gaining momentum in the Pacific Northwest live music scene, performing Treefort Festival in Boise last March, followed by a West Coast tour and the PDX Pop Now! Festival in June.  They’ve opened for Waxahatchee, Austra, and Seattle sweethearts Tacocat. Though not currently on tour, they’ll play at The Malt Ball at Mississippi Studios in Portland on July 17th.  Keep an eye our for more shows through their website or facebook page. For now, you can watch the in-studio recording of "Gemini Rise" from their October visit to KEXP.
