The Parrots - Jame Gumb (MP3)

Madrid band The Parrots surely rival their city counterparts Hinds for the chillest garage sound in the world. The Parrots have the same knack for fuzzy give-and-take melodies and slurred vocals that have catapulted Hinds to international success. So it comes as no surprise to hear that Diego of The Parrots produced Hinds debut album, Leave Me Alone. And while The Parrots match Hinds in laid-back non-chalantless, they are also masters of speed. They signed their record deal with Heavenly records on a pool table at SXSW, recorded their forthcoming debut album, Los Niños Sin Miedo, in a week, and they play with a careless cool that can only be emitted by a degree of spontaneity. The groups penchant for speed combined with their laid-back aesthetic results in music that is loose and cool, fun and carefree. That is to say, while they certainly like to go fast, the music they create thoroughly inspires taking life at a pleasant stroll. Their debut album will surely stay true to the theme, but single Jame Gumb serves as an outlier, channeling its namesake to brew much darker tones. The song, which shares the name of Silence of The Lambs antagonist Buffalo Bill, offers a rumbling bass line and hushed samples of people screaming (see Silence of The Lambs). Chiming guitar inspires beachy chills and the grating vocals add a degree of pleasant discomfort, similar to watching a well crafted horror movie.

The Parrots' debut, Los Niños Sin Miedo, is due August 26th on Heavenly Recordings. The group is in the midst of a European tour at the moment, but keep an eye on their Facebook and website for possible U.S. tour updates. In the meantime, check out their newly released video for "No Me Gustas, Te Quiero”, also from the forthcoming album:
