Song of the Day: Kestrels – No Alternative

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “No Alternative” by Kestrels from their upcoming self-titled album due September 30th on Sonic Unyon.

Kestrels – No Alternative (MP3)
A little bit lo-fi, a little bit noise-pop, and definitely a throwback to the 90’s, Kestrel’s newest single “No Alternative” is all fuzz pedals, potent drums, and soft vocals. Fitting, considering the song title is (probably) a nod to the classic alt-rock compilation featuring Nirvana, Pavement and Sonic Youth. The Canadian trio is set to release their third LP this month, consisting of ten shoegaze-y tunes for your listening pleasure.

Kestrels self-produced their first two LPs, along with a handful of singles and EPs, so the upcoming album marks a big change for them. Alex Bonenfant (METZ, Crystal Castles) and Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate) both had a hand in production, and Ringo Deathstarr’s Elliott Frazier and Alex Gehring both have guest appearances on the album. Based on those facts alone, the new release is worth a try.

The band just finished a Canadian tour and a US mini tour, which included opening for Dinosaur Jr.  They have no future dates listed at the moment, but keep an eye on their website and Facebook page for updates. Kestrels also don’t have any videos out for the forthcoming LP, but you can listen to another new song from it, entitled “Waiting”, here:
