Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Minor Justice″ by Flock of Dimes, from the 2016 album If You See Me, Say Yes on Partisan Records.

Flock of Dimes - Minor Justice (MP3)Flock of Dimes is the solo project of Jenn Wasner, best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the wildly popular indie band Wye Oak.  Since feeling a strain on her relationship with the guitar (she identifies her voice as her primary instrument, though her work on guitar has often been a stronger magnet for praise), Wasner all but eliminated use of the instrument from Wye Oak’s 2014 album, released around the time Flock of Dimes was formed as an outlet for experimentation not fitting with Wye Oak's aesthetic. If You See Me, Say Yes is the debut LP, a 12-track album that seems to truly express all of Wasner’s musical urges. Unlike earlier bass-heavy singles, If You See Me Say Yes has come full circle, realigning with the dream-poppy vibes Wye Oak fans would hope for, though the electronic sound is divergent enough to warrant the separation.  Minor Justice is a danceable, mesmerizing single in which Wasner has made effective use of vocal effects and repetition. The track is reminiscent of electropop from the earlier 2000s, like Yacht and The Blow, with a modern, dramatic edge.

Wasner has also recorded as Dungeonesse with Jon Ehrens, and still plays and tours with Wye Oak, who also released an album this year. Flock of Dimes is currently on tour, playing in Seattle at Barboza on October 22nd.  Keep track of other tour dates and happenings on the Flock of Dimes Facebook page and website. For now watch her video for "Semaphore", another song from her new album:
