Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Golden Age” by Chris Staples from his 2016 album, Golden Age, on Barsuk Records.

Chris Staples – Golden Age (MP3) Nostalgia is the driving force behind Golden Age, the latest album from Seattle singer-songwriter Chris Staples, previously of the mid-90’s rock band Twothirtyeight. The album’s title track is catchy and upbeat, propelled by recollection and longing with a sound evocative of Noah & the Whale or Belle & Sebastian. The song maintains a feeling of innocence and a healthy dose of skepticism. “Do you want to resurrect some golden age?” he asks. “Be honest with yourself, it wasn’t all that great.”

On Golden Age, Staples employs greater instrumental range than he has in the past, which makes sense when you consider that his first album was self-produced, picked up by Barsuk Records after its initial release. The support of a label has allowed Staples to experiment and expand, lending a new depth to his work while maintaining his characteristically simple and pleasant vocals.

Hopefully, you made it to see Staples at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle on October 8. He’ll be touring the UK, Denmark and The Netherlands in the following weeks, but hopefully he'll be back again soon. Until then keep up with him on his Facebook page and website, and, for now, enjoy this recording of his in-studio session on KEXP back in 2014.
