Review Revue: Jimmy and the Mustangs

Jimmy and the Mustangs might be lovely people without a bone of misogyny in their bodies (they did, according to their "I swear a member of the band didn't write this" Wikipedia page, make their live debut opening up for the Go-Go's), but there are a few things about their debut album, Hey Little Girl, that probably wouldn't fly these days - and even raised a few eyebrows 35 years ago, when this record turned up at KCMU. I mean, we can start with the creepy vibe of the title, and then move right around to the back cover, as mentioned by one of our reviewers.Either the Go-Go's knew these guys and saw something that we don't here, or they just didn't look too closely at who was opening up for them. Just in the interest of peace and goodwill, I prefer to believe the former. But I'll probably be more likely to listen to a Go-Go's record than this one any time soon.

"Rockabilly... you pick' em:"

"These guys are great!!! Check out 'Bring My Cadillac Back.' Good rockabilly guitar licks."

"'Pretty Baby' also rocks."

"Very good. Reminds me of the Rockouts."

"'Let's Dance!'"

"That's OK, Neil. Thanks anyway, really."

"Great blues with You Don't Want Me. Also like Shame Shame. Shame."

"Useless!!!"

"(Not to mention sexist - check the back cover)"*

"Sorry, Alfred. It's not great, but it's not all that bad, either. As for the sexist back cover, I think you see something that we mere mortals are missing."

"Cock Rock!!!"

*Yeah, it's not great:

Ed helpfully kept a tour diary, with thi…
