Calling all musicians looking to take your band and brand to the next level! KEXP, in partnership with Upstream Music Festival + Summit and MoPOP, is kicking off our Mastering The Hustle artist education workshop series. The first workshop is “Building Your Music Brand”.

This free event features a killer lineup of badass Seattle music icons like Sub Pop Records’ CEO Megan Jasper; marketing guru Megan Tweed; Bree McKenna of Tacocat; and Thunderpussy’s Molly Sides, Whitney Petty, Leah Julius, and Ruby Dunphy. All will be on hand to speak about their success and challenges in the music industry, and to answer your burning questions.

Sure, you make great music. But are people listening? And perhaps more importantly, who are you? What is your music all about? Not such easy questions for some, yet crucial to answer if you hope to be successful. This free event will help you figure out your musical brand.

Seattle's Thunderpussy

Hear from two Seattle bands taking the world by storm. Tacocat has been making crimson waves with their upbeat, tongue-in-cheek brand of feisty, political pop punk. Their latest album Lost Time was produced by Erik Blood and released on Hardly Art Records. Thunderpussy has crafted a unique spectacle of live rock debauchery that keeps fans coming time and again. Both bands have played massive venues like Sasquatch Festival, and embarked upon successful tours. Surely you've seen and heard both of these excellent bands on KEXP.

Megan Tweed
Megan Tweed

When it comes to PR and branding, few are as skilled as Megan Tweed with Edelman and Assembly PNW Digital. Tweed is known for her creativity and vision, and has partnered with countless area brands looking for a voice across a variety of platforms. She also fronts The Family Curse and owns and operates the independent record label Fainting Room Records out of her home in Seattle.

Sub Pop Records' Megan Jasper

Speaking of records labels, one that needs no introduction is Seattle’s legendary Sub Pop Records, who boast Nirvana, Mudhoney, Sleater-Kinney, Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty, and many more PNW greats. Megan Jasper has been with the label since the heady grunge years, and she famously created the “grunge speak” hoax (look it up, it’s hilarious). Now a leader at Sub Pop, she continues to champion a diverse and ever-deepening roster of the world’s best music.

Also on hand will be the non-profit Artist Trust, who serves Washington’s arts community through grant giving, education, and professional resources, as well as other forms of support for arts in our community. They will be on hand from 3-5 PM, and you are invited to sit down with Artist Trust staff and ask questions about their funding and business practice programs as well as other resource support.
