Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unrealeased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Rebel Black” by Angelic Milk from the 2016 EP Teenage Movie Soundtrack on PNKSLM.Angelic Milk - Rebel Black (MP3)All the way over in Saint Petersburg, there's a rebel-black lipstick-wearing devotchka named Sarah Persephona, who leads a twinkling pop rock band called Angelic Milk within Russia's relatively inchoate indie scene. Pulling her bootstraps up at the age of fifteen, Persephona formed her riot girl project in 2013 out of boredom during the a season of holidays, which produced her EP Sacred Holidays. The musician rocks a "too lo-fi to live, too gothpop to die" aesthetic and expounds a sound situated in the arenas of shoegaze and angsty punk. The latest Bildungsroman by the noisy nova is a 4-track EP entitled Teenage Movie Soundtrack on PNKSLM, a label that finds its artists featured on our Song of the Day podcast often.

The teenage saltiness and spunk is alive and well in Sarah Persephona. Her alt-princess panache and gusto fortify her identity as a youthful alternative icon. Angelic Milk's catchy debut single from Teenage Movie Soundtrack,  "Rebel Black", is like a well composed doll, haired teased out with fuzz, manicured with Psychocandy lipgloss, and dressed in Colleen Green pop punk demeanor. Scenes from "Rebel Black" play out like a cult dramedy. Cult in the sense of scratching a certain niche sound. Drama in the sense of "Yesterday taught me I'm dying here / let's get out of here" and humor in the sense of a don't-mess-with-me, prissy feistiness.

When it comes to touring, though, all seems to be quiet on the Angelic Milk front, but as she's been popping out EPs frequently, you'll want to keep up with new releases and news on her website and their Facebook page. Another awesome single Angelic Milk released last year was "IDK How," which you can check out in the video below.
