Song of the Day: Weirdo Machine – Something Inside
Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Something Inside” by Weirdo Machine from their 2016 self-released EP, Eagle.
Weirdo Machine – Something Inside (MP3)
Though they may be new on your radar (and ours!), Weirdo Machine has been cranking out music for years. If the legend
is true, their creative roots dig back to a secretive 70’s Soviet Bloc-era collective whose history is shrouded in mystery but whose subversive techniques rattled cages of the Communist clampdown. The Seattle band that now takes the name Weirdo Machine, and whose members previously formed the mid-2000s band Bang the Mantra, another term generated around the legendary collective, have keep the spirit of underground art alive. In fact, their 2016 EP, Eagle
, is their first recorded release as Weirdo Machine. We are all the more fortunate for their recent self-exposure, as EP tracks like today’s featured song are pure joy. “Something Inside” starts as a reflective gem of fuzzy power-pop, for about the first three minutes, before kicking into a rallying chant-worthy anthem. “Are you going to save my soul?” The Weirdo Machine just might.
Not surprisingly, there’s not much about this underground group online, but you can find out more on their website, and there read more about the legend of the Weirdo Machine and its novelesque story. For now, check out the opening track from their 4-song EP:
