The Piano Has Been Drinking… ‘Cause It’s International Piano Day

Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener. — Nils Frahm

On the 88th day of every year, the world tickles the ivories in honor of International Piano Day. (The “88th” day because that’s how many keys are on a piano!) From Portland to Poland, Budapest to Berlin, there are dozens of concerts planned across the globe to celebrate this centuries-old instrument. Here at KEXP, we’ve been lucky to be gifted with a beautiful Baldwin M1 Artist Grand Piano, on permanent loan from the Gibson Showroom in Seattle and installed by A-1 Piano Sales, Rentals, and Moving. (It never would’ve fit in our old in-studio room!) In honor of Piano Day, we’ve gathered up a round-up of KEXP sessions where our guests have taken advantage of this wonderful loan. Here’s to many more live performances with this beautiful instrument!
