Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription.  This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unrealeased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear.  Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Just a Cloud” by Lusine from his 2017 album, Sensorimotor, on Ghostly International.

Lusine - Just a Cloud (MP3)Seattle resident Jeff McIlwain makes eclectic electronic music under the monikor Lusine.  He has been working in different forms of IDM and ambient music through the years and continues his excellent work with 2017’s Sensorimotor.  Lusine has been prolific through releases of LP’s, EP’s and working with filmmakers like David Gordon Green.  On “Just a Cloud” he combines choppy beats with pure synth warmth and the floating, jagged vocal sampling of Vilja Larjosto.

Ghostly International is full of unique genre experimentations with artists like Black Marble, Matthew Dear and Gold Panda.  McIlwain has been working with the label for over a decade now and Sensorimotor blurs the lines between electro, IDM and even melancholy synth-pop.  “Just A Cloud” contains the most life-affirming, uplifting sounds on the record.  It’s a genuine joy; the whole album is wonderful and deserves a sit-down, headphone listen.

You'll have a chance to trip out to McIlwain’s sonic flow, when Lusine performs live on KEXP on Wednesday, April 26th, at 9:30AM, in anticipation of his show the following Thursday, May 4th, at Neumos. You won't want to miss it, as it's possibly Lusine like you've never heard him, performing as "Lusine + drums" with Seattle's Trent Moorman. Find out more information on his website and Facebook page. For now, check out the new video for "Just a Cloud" below.
