Song of the Day: My Goodness - Silver Lining

Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Silver Lining" by Seattle garage duo My Goodness, from their upcoming album, Scavengers, due June 2nd on Votiv Music/Freakout Records.

My Goodness - Silver Lining (MP3)When My Goodness first appeared on the scene, they were guitar and drums duo who blared heavy blues rock riffs. Their 2014 debut, Shiver + Shake, helped solidify that reputation with track-after-track of fuzz and pounding rhythms. But last year, we first started to see a change in the band with their Islands EP which featured keyboards and pop-like melodies. As the band continued to work on new material, they found themselves because less focused on a loud, powerful performance and instead turning to music recording programs like Logic to experiment with the dynamics of their music. With their upcoming record, Scavenger, they've been able to maintain the propulsive energy they've mastered over the years and offer fuller arrangements with bolder musical choices. They've even expanded their live lineup to a five-piece.

Their latest single, "Silver Lining", exemplifies the newly minted iteration of My Goodness. The track opens with vocalist/guitarist Joel Schneider singing over solo piano chords – already an indication that the band's moving away from their Shiver + Shake days. As the drums kick in, they bring along organ drones and distorted guitar riffs. Schneider's voice sounds smoother than ever as croons over the rising chorus. Even shaking up their sound so much, My Goodness has a brilliant sense of keeping the momentum going, even making the quieter moments feel intense and energized.
