Upstream Music Fest + Summit 2017, Day 3: Summer Cannibals

Summer Cannibals are a band which announces their presence. Since the release of 2016’s Full of It record, released on Kill Rock Stars, the band has fine-tuned an impressive live show, as evidenced by their set today at Little London Plane, as part of Day 3 of our Upstream Fest & Summit coverage. Featuring dual guitar work from Jessica Boudreaux and Harrison Rapp, Summer Cannibals added an even more jagged edge to material from their debut LP.

Summer Cannibals started their set with a fuzzed-out unreleased b-side, titled “Let You Fall,” before veering into Full of It highlight “Just a Little Bit,” the band’s harmonies emerging above the wall of noise. The musical chemistry between Boudreaux and Rapp was palpable, the two’s guitar parts ebbing and flowing to better compliment each other. This reached a peak during “Say My Name,” on which Boudreaux played a restrained, yet ripping guitar solo, momentarily backing away from the mic. Though the band at time channels 90s icons like Veruca Salt or Hole, they have quickly carved out a distinctive place for themselves in the Northwest Music Scene.

Partway through the performance, Boudreaux said, “we said we were just going to play the chill songs,” before trailing off. Needless to say, the band instead decided to shred, much to the delight of the packed audience.

Catch Summer Cannibals tonight at 745, as part of the Kill Rock Stars showcase at Axis 1.
