If you were listening to The Morning Show on KEXP this morning, you may have caught that it's the 73rd birthday of Sir Ray Davies, founding member of The Kinks. Alongside his brother and bandmate, Dave, Davies helped the influential UK band climb the charts with three UK Number One hits, 1964's "You Really Got Me" and "Tired of Waiting for You," as well as 1966's "Sunny Afternoon." (Who else is surprised that classics like "Lola" and "Waterloo Sunset" stalled at number two?) The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in November 2005, and Davies was knighted earlier this year for "services to the arts." It goes without saying that they've influenced generations of artists to follow, and it's no surprise so many of them have tried their hands at their favorite Kinks classics. So, stop your sobbing, and enjoy this KEXP Video Roundup of Kinks cover songs!
