Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “Locked Out” by Daddy Issues from their 2017 album, Deep Dream, on Infinity Cat.

Daddy Issues - Locked Out (MP3)

Nashville record label Infinity Cat signs about one artist a year. Luckily for Daddy Issues, they caught the attention of an employee who curates a cassette series on the label in 2015. Within a few days of submitting their tape, the trio was signed as Infinity Cat’s newest band. The name Daddy Issues came from writing on a bathroom wall that vocalist Jenna Moynihan thought was an already existing all girl punk band. Once she realized it wasn’t, she enlisted the help of friends Emily Maxwell on drums and Jenna Mitchell on bass to make her vision a reality.

“Locked Out” tackles on the feeling of being misled in the beginning of the relationship. Setting the scene of a summer night that goes awry, the instruments have a sort of foreshadowing of their own, as the guitar and drums start out simple and quickly grow heavier as Moynihan’s lyrics begin to take a turn for the worst. “Turns out I’m a sucker / I’m just your type of girl,” Moynihan eventually admits, after an explosion of noise before the final chorus.

Daddy Issues, unfortunately, has no plans to visit Seattle soon, but keep up with their Facebook page for any updates, and in the meantime, check out a live performance of today's Song of the Day, filmed at The Basement East in East Nashville.
