As part of KEXP’s National Radio Week coverage, on the KEXP Blog we will be spotlighting some of the stories and personal testimonials given by a variety of radio luminaries in interviews done with KEXP DJs John Richards, Kevin Cole, and Morning Show producer Owen Murphy. These interviews articulately explain the enduring legacy of early independent radio stations, as well as the importance of radio to shape and create a community through shared love of music.  In the words of WFNX DJ Kurt St. Thomas, “if you pay enough attention, radio will probably change your life.”

“Mayor of the Sunset Strip” Rodney Bingenheimer debuted his late night show “Rodney on the ROQ” in the Summer of 1976 carving the path for many then-unknown musicians including Black Flag, Blondie, Joan Jett, The Smiths, and more. Rodney’s Sunday night show was a life saver in the late 70s in LA. Every week he played the best stuff, a very diverse selection of rare, new, old, local and imports that you would never ever hear anywhere else. He single handily introduced me & hundreds, evently thousand of music lovers to punk music, post-punk, the best of the U.K., NY and the very exciting emerging LA punk scene, his interviews are priceless, and his show was the go to place to who was playing where and when for the entire week. I used to tape his entire show every week and then make a best of compilation of the songs I liked best. Thank you Rodney, your the best!
